If you're reading this, you nay have recently received gotten a new Spider Plant. We hope your Spider Plant reminds you that beautiful spaces, inside and out, continue to grow with a little care.
The good news? Spider plants are one of the easiest plants you'll ever own.
Meet Your New Plant
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is loved for its graceful arching foliage, air-purifying qualities, and adorable baby "spiderettes" that dangle from mature plants. They're forgiving, pet-friendly, and incredibly easy to propagate, making them one of our favorite plants to gift.
Bonus: Spider plants are considered non-toxic to both cats and dogs, making them a wonderful choice for pet-loving households and gifting.
Indoor Spider Plant Care
☀️ Light
Spider plants love bright, indirect light.
Near an east-facing window is ideal. South or west windows work beautifully too, as long as the afternoon sun is filtered by blinds or curtains.
Too much direct Florida sun can scorch the leaves, while very low light may cause the variegation to fade.
💧 Water
Spider plants like to dry out slightly between waterings.
A good rule of thumb is to water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry.
In Northeast Florida, this typically means:
- Summer: about once every 5–7 days
- Winter: every 10–14 days
Gardenista Jax Pro Tip: Always empty decorative pots after watering so roots aren't sitting in water.
🌱 Soil
Use a quality indoor potting mix with good drainage.
Spider plants don't mind being slightly rootbound, so don't rush to repot. When roots begin circling heavily or pushing the plant upward, it's time to size up one pot.
🌡️ Temperature
They thrive in the same temperatures you do:
- 65–80°F is perfect.
- Keep them away from AC vents and heating vents when possible.
Can Spider Plants Live Outside?
Absolutely!
In Northeast Florida, spider plants make wonderful additions to:
- Covered porches
- Shaded patios
- Front entry planters
- Hanging baskets
- Under large oak trees
- Protected lanais
Avoid placing them in direct afternoon sun, especially during the summer months.
If temperatures drop near freezing during winter, simply bring them indoors until the cold passes.
Our Favorite Trick
Spider plants LOVE Florida humidity.
If your bathroom has natural light, your spider plant may become one of the happiest plants in your home.
We've also tucked them into shady outdoor planters where they soften edges and spill beautifully over containers.
When Will Mine Have Babies?
One of the most fun things about spider plants is the little baby plants they eventually produce.
As your plant matures, it will send out long stems with tiny spider plants attached.
Once the babies have several leaves and small roots, you can:
- Snip them off
- Place them in water or moist soil
- Grow an entirely new plant
They're one of the easiest houseplants to propagate and make wonderful gifts for friends and family.
Common Questions
Brown tips?
This is the most common question we get.
Usually it's caused by one of these:
- Tap water minerals
- Inconsistent watering
- Dry indoor air
Don't worry!
Simply trim the brown tips with clean scissors, following the natural shape of the leaf.
Yellow leaves?
Usually a sign of overwatering.
Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again.
Pale leaves?
Move the plant somewhere with brighter indirect light.
Pro Tips from Gardenista Jax
✔ Rotate your plant every couple of weeks for even growth.
✔ Wipe dust off the leaves occasionally so the plant can photosynthesize efficiently.
✔ Don't panic if a leaf bends or breaks—simply trim it at the base.
✔ Resist watering on a schedule. Check the soil first.
✔ Spider plants actually perform best when they're just a little rootbound.
