Too Much Rain? How To Keep Your Plants & Garden Healthy!

Too Much Rain? How To Keep Your Plants & Garden Healthy!

In Northeast Florida, we're no strangers to heavy rain! While a good rainfall can give your garden a much-needed refresh, too much of a good thing can leave your plants struggling. Saturated soil, poor drainage, and standing water can quickly turn a thriving landscape into a soggy situation.

At Gardenista Jax, we believe understanding your plants' needs is the key to creating a beautiful, healthy landscape. A few thoughtful adjustments during rainy weather can make all the difference in keeping your outdoor space looking its best.

Let Mother Nature Handle the Watering

When the rain keeps coming, your irrigation system deserves a break!

One of the simplest ways to protect your landscape during periods of heavy rainfall is to adjust your watering schedule or temporarily turn off your irrigation system. Too much water can prevent oxygen from reaching plant roots, leading to stress and potentially root rot.

Before turning your irrigation back on, check the soil a few inches below the surface. If it's still moist, there's no need to add more water. Remember, your plants' watering needs change with the weather, so your irrigation schedule should too!

Make Sure Your Planters Can Drain

Beautiful planters are one of our favorite ways to add personality and seasonal color to an outdoor space, but proper drainage is essential to keeping them healthy.

After a heavy rain, take a moment to check your containers. Make sure drainage holes are clear of soil and debris and that excess water can easily escape. If your planter sits in a saucer, empty any standing water to prevent roots from sitting in overly saturated soil.

For planters that tend to collect too much rain, consider temporarily moving them to a covered area. A little extra attention can go a long way in keeping your arrangements looking full and vibrant.

Protect Your Soil with Mulch & Ground Cover

Heavy rainfall doesn't just affect your plants. It can also wash away valuable topsoil and disrupt the appearance of your landscape beds.

A properly applied layer of mulch helps slow surface water runoff and protects the soil from erosion. Ground cover plants can also help stabilize soil with their roots, particularly in areas where rainwater tends to flow through your landscape.

The key is being intentional with placement. Avoid piling mulch against plant stems or tree trunks, and remember that too much mulch can hold excess moisture in areas that are already wet.

Thoughtful landscape design isn't just about how your garden looks. It's also about creating an environment where your plants can thrive!

Pay Attention to What Your Plants Are Telling You

Your plants have a way of letting you know when something isn't quite right.

Yellowing leaves, wilting despite wet soil, and consistently soggy garden beds can all be signs of excess moisture. After a period of heavy rainfall, take a walk through your landscape and look for areas where water is collecting or plants appear stressed.

Paying attention to these small details can help you catch potential problems before they become bigger issues. If water continues to pool in the same areas, it may be time to evaluate your landscape's drainage.

Keep Your Garden Thriving, Rain or Shine

A healthy landscape requires more than sunshine and water. It takes thoughtful planning, proper maintenance, and an understanding of what your plants need throughout the seasons.

By making simple adjustments to your irrigation, checking your planters, and protecting your soil, you can help your garden stay healthy and beautiful even when Florida's weather is unpredictable.
